The campers at Jened, however, are all disabled teens, and Jened offers a rare utopia of what a world centered on their perspective could be. The idea for a film on Jened began with an off-hand comment at lunch. Jim LeBrecht, an award-winning sound designer for film and theater based in Oakland, California, had worked on several documentaries, including three films over the course of 15 years with Nicole Newnham as co-director.
Camp Jened, which LeBrecht attended at the age of 15 in , offered disabled teens a sense of normalcy often not found at home. Everyone had some bodily concern or limitation, so no one was the stigmatized odd one out. The world, for once, did not assume an able-bodied perspective. A product of late 60s radicalism, the camp was a melting pot of liberation: formative conversations on not being heard and finding your voice, baseball games and folk singalongs, furtive makeouts in dark corners.
First, they had to find evidence. The two began outreach from a Facebook page LeBrecht sent Newnham on which Jened alums had posted photos and memories for years. And the film-makers called up Judy Heumann, a polio survivor and disability rights crusader who served as special adviser for international disability rights at the US Department of State under Barack Obama and worked as a counselor at Jened in her early 20s.
People will listen to us? We have some rights here? LeBrecht, like many campers from Jened and Heumann herself, carried this sense of purpose forward.

Stanley Tookie Williams was an American gangster who moved to Los Angeles at a young age and immediately became immersed in the street life. Williams and a friend created the “Crips” gang and would eventually be arrested and convicted of murder associated with the gang’s activity. Williams’ mother, who was only 17 when he was born, was left to care for Williams alone after his father abandoned the family.
In , Williams and his mother left New Orleans and headed to Los Angeles, California, by Greyhound bus in the hopes of achieving a better way of life. Williams later recalled the affluent-looking South Central neighborhood where they rented their first apartment as “a shiny red apple rotting away at the core.
Finding the street “more interesting than being at home,” Williams began wandering the neighborhood at age six. As the new kid on the block, Williams had to quickly learn how to defend himself from neighborhood bullies, and was often thrown into the middle of physical conflicts. Immersed in a culture of violence and drugs and without a strict parental influence, Williams grew up idolizing criminals and “mimicking pimps and drug dealers.
Later, these dogs would be shot or beaten to death by the gamblers and hustlers in his neighborhood. The betting progressed to fights between young boys, and Williams was paid to box other young boys to unconsciousness. The experiences hardened Williams, who kept the horrors he saw—and performed—from his mother. Williams rarely attended school, believing that he was destined to be “dys-educated”—a term he coined to describe the impaired and diseased knowledge he received in school and on the streets.
Instead, he was convinced he could do better in the streets, and earned his reputation with his fists.

There were fun and games — and serious conversation that would propel the nascent disability rights movement. One of the stars is Judy Heumann, who proved just as inspiring as a counselor rallying campers around a meal as a pioneering disability rights leader organizing activists to fight for access. She then led a day sit-in in in San Francisco, demanding the enforcement of federal legislation that was a precursor of sorts to the Americans With Disabilities Act.
Speaking by phone Friday about the documentary — directed by Jim LeBrecht and Nicole Newnham, and produced by the Obamas — she discussed Camp Jened, what has changed since the s and what needs to be done. Here are edited excerpts from the conversation. How did this start at Camp Jened? We were focusing on who we were and what we wanted to be and began over these years to look at what our fears and concerns were.
I had always been raised that, both because of my Jewishness and the importance of education in our family, but also this real belief that in the United States, if you worked hard and followed the rules, you would be able to achieve what you wanted. But that was becoming clearly more problematic for those of us who had disabilities. People were working hard and doing many things. But using The New York Times as an example, The Times was not covering disability as a civil rights issue — it was covering it as a medical issue, even when we were having demonstrations in New York City in The media at large was not depicting us in a positive way.
Telethons were a significant way that people were getting information, which focused on helpless people. So camp was this playground.

At that time, as LeBrecht who is among the former campers interviewed puts it, “I had to fit into this world that wasn’t built for me. Small wonder that his introduction to Camp Jened, a bare-bones site in upstate New York, struck him and others as “a utopia,” a bit like Dorothy stepping out of Kansas and into the multi-colored world of Oz.
The filmmakers draw upon a trove of grainy home video shot at the time, which almost feels like stepping into a time machine. They capture the teens participating in activities they never could before, while reveling in the utterly liberating aspect of being around people like themselves. In that environment, as the video shows, they were free to share feelings, discuss issues like overprotective parents and explore their sexuality.
In an especially amusing moment, Denise Sherer, a paraplegic, recalls being inordinately proud when it was discovered she has a sexually transmitted disease, if only to demonstrate that someone could want her. Read More.
